Tambudzai Makinzi was a young model and beauty queen who lived in Cape Town, South Africa, when she was struck down by an aggressive tumour. It was diagnosed as Chondrosarcoma – a very rare type of cancer. After 4 years of unsuccessful treatment in Africa, it grew back more aggressively than ever, devouring her whole face. Her only hope of survival was to have a dangerous operation. Tambu flew 6,000 miles to London to meet an extraordinary surgeon who believed he could save her life. In March 2015, Professor Hutchison pulled together a specialist team of 6 surgeons and embarked on a pioneering operation to save her life. After more than 35 hours on the operating table Tambu was given a new face – built using flesh from her leg.
